Each year, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Central Carolina Chapter joins with national and international colleagues to celebrate National Philanthropy Day, a celebration of exceptional individuals and organizations that have dedicated themselves to philanthropy. Celebrate philanthropy in the Midlands of South Carolina by nominating an individual or organization to be honored at our National Philanthropy Day.


In response to COVID-19, National Philanthropy Day will look different this year. This year's event will be a virtual celebration of philanthropy in our community in November 2020. Details coming soon!


2020 award categories will also look a little different this year. AFPCSC is looking forward to celebrating the businesses, companies, nonprofits and volunteers who have continued their philanthropic work and have creatively adapted during COVID-19.

Please check past award winners prior to nominating. If an organization or individual have won in a particular category, they are eligible for nomination in the same category after 5 years.

2020 National Philanthropy Day Awards Criteria


Outstanding Philanthropic Small Business or Entrepreneur


This award honors a small business or entrepreneur that demonstrates outstanding commitment through service, financial support, and motivation of others to take philanthropic leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. 


Additional criteria include: 

  • Description of initiatives and achievements, specific to community assistance, during COVID-19.

  • Description of impact made by the organization’s efforts.

  • Examples of leadership that resulted in funding for a project, organization, or community initiative during COVID-19

  • Please include any further information that explains why you feel this candidate deserves this special award. 


Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation


This award honors a company or corporation that demonstrates outstanding commitment through service, financial support, and power in numbers to take philanthropic leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. 


Additional criteria include: 

  • Evidence of investment and impact made in the community. 

  • Evidence of direct gift support indicated by projects in the Midlands community.

  • Description of achievements accomplished through the organization’s efforts and funding. 

  • Evidence of encouragement and motivation given to employees of the organization and others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and community involvement. 

  • Please include any further information that explains why you feel this candidate deserves this special award.


Outstanding Philanthropic Small Nonprofit (budget $750k or less)


This award honors a small nonprofit (budget $750k or less) that demonstrates exceptional success in fundraising, ethics and has continued to support their community during the COVID-19 pandemic through creative and innovative endeavors. 


Additional criteria include: 

  • Description of achievements, specific to fundraising and community assistance, during COVID-19.

  • Description of impact made by the organization’s efforts. 

  • Examples of leadership that resulted in funding for a project, organization, or community initiative during COVID-19.

  • Please include any further information that explains why you feel this candidate deserves this special award. 


Outstanding Philanthropic Large Nonprofit (budget $750k and above)


This award honors a large nonprofit (budget $750k or more) that demonstrates exceptional success in fundraising, ethics and has continued to support their community during the COVID-19 pandemic through creative and innovative endeavors. 


Additional criteria include: 

  • Description of achievements, specific to fundraising and community assistance, during COVID-19.

  • Description of impact made by the organization’s efforts. 

  • Examples of leadership that resulted in funding for a project, organization, or community initiative during COVID-19.

  • Please include any further information that explains why you feel this candidate deserves this special award. 


Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser (Group or Individual)


This award honors a volunteer group or individual that stepped up to support their community during the COVID-19 pandemic in outstanding or creative ways.


Additional criteria include: 

  • Evidence of leadership and ability.

  • Description of time, effort, and financial commitment.

  • Description of goals/impact achieved by the individual’s or group’s efforts. 

  • Evidence of success in recruiting and motivating other volunteers.

  • Please include any further information that explains why you feel this candidate deserves this special award. 


 Outstanding Rising Star


This award honors a young fundraising professional who is 30 years or younger and demonstrates exceptional potential for success in fundraising, ethics, and support for colleagues. The winner of this category will be awarded the Charlotte Berry Spirit of Philanthropy Young Professional Scholarship, which is a year-long Young Professional AFP membership (valued at $95). 

Additional criteria include: 

  • Candidate must be 30 years or younger, per AFP International guidelines for joining at this membership level 

  • Description of current achievements, specific to fundraising, previous background on career, experience, and results. 

  • Examples of leadership potential that is effective, creative, and has resulted in or assisted in funding for a project, organization, or community initiative. 

  • Description of person’s commitment to continuing professional development, including AFP membership, five years of philanthropic experience, conference participation, professional education, and promoting the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice for fundraising executives.

  • Evidence of commitment to this profession and to philanthropy through voluntary service and financial support of nonprofit or independent organizations. 

  • Please include any further information that explains why you feel this candidate deserves this special award.


OUTSTANDING FUNDRAISING EXECUTIVE (Small Organization)


This award honors a fundraising professional who is a member of AFP and demonstrates exceptional success in fundraising, ethics, and support for colleagues. This fundraising professional is employed by an organization whose budget is $750,000 or less annually. The winner of this category will be awarded a Charlotte Berry Spirit of Philanthropy Scholarship, which is a year-long AFP membership (valued at $275). 


Additional criteria include: 

  • Description of current career highlights and achievements, specific to fundraising, previous background on career, experience, and results. 

  • Examples of leadership that is effective, creative, and has resulted in funding for a project, organization, or community initiative. 

  • Description of person’s commitment to continuing professional development, including AFP membership, five years of philanthropic experience, conference participation, professional education, and promoting the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice for fundraising executives. 

  • Evidence of commitment to this profession and to philanthropy through voluntary service and financial support of nonprofit or independent organizations. 

  • Please include any further information that explains why you feel this candidate deserves this special award.

The winner of this category will be awarded a Charlotte Berry Spirit of Philanthropy Scholarship, which is a year-long AFP membership (valued at $275).

  • Description of current career highlights and achievements, specific to fundraising, previous background on career, experience, and results. 

  • Examples of leadership that is effective, creative, and has resulted in funding for a project, organization, or community initiative. 

  • Description of person’s commitment to continuing professional development, including AFP membership, five years of philanthropic experience, conference participation, professional education, and promoting the AFP Code of Ethical Principals and Standards of Professional Practice for fundraising executives. 

  • Evidence of commitment to this profession and to philanthropy through voluntary service and financial support of nonprofit or independent organizations.

People’s Choice: Most Creative Virtual COVID-19 Fundraiser


This award will honor an individual, organization, or business that the public nominates for creating and executing the most creative virtual fundraiser during the COVID-19 pandemic. The virtual fundraiser may have supported the pandemic relief efforts generally or through a specific charitable organization. We want to hear about all the amazing people and organizations who took hard times and turned them into a chance to support others.
